Final Week
I would like to teach the book Don't Call Me Crazy by Kelly Jensen In my classroom. If you want Kids to grow up and take themselves and their work seriously. Like you do. We expect them to understand what is going on in their mind. This book helps kids understand that it is okay to have a down day and to be sad without being labild sick or menttaly ill. A lot of kids go through depression and anxiety and they are scared to speak up about it because of the stigma around depression. As soon as we start looking at depression and anxiety as a part of life and positive ways kids will never know how to deal with it. You want kids to be prepared right? This book will give them a glimpse of reality and what some people go through and not to be ashamed of it either. If you are asking why have kids spend time in class reading something they can easily read on their own? Some kids may not have the resource to get this book and read in their free time. They need a safe place like school to read a book and have a good depth understanding of it as well. They may have questions that their parents at home are unprepared to answer. When I am here they can understand some complexities and get explanations. They can be pushed in their reading skills and ask good constructive questions as well. Don't you want kids to be prepared for real life and with the right information. I want them to know that it is okay to have any of the feelings mentioned in the book. One quote from the book that shows the power of the book is “I was trying to be brave. I was trying to let people in. I was trying. I am who I am today because of my messes. Because I’ve survived them. Because I’ve written about them. Because I’ve learned from them, because I keep searching for new tools to clean them up, because I keep trying to heal.`` I am not asking anymore. I am demanding that I teach this book in my classroom. I don't want any of my students to feel like I am centering them from hard topics in some books
When talking about children's literature and young adult literature there are some differences and similarities. Children's literature is more elementary and picture books but young adult literature is for middle to high school kids that are more complex.
There is a very big impact that children's literature leaves on kids at a very young age. If your parents read to you at a young age you are more likely to enjoy reading in the future and pass it down to your kids. Reading to the kids helped develop kids orla and writing very early in their education so they are excelling in english. Having colorful lines and shapes will make the kids improve their observation skills in both younger and older kids. In the slideshow The Children Responds to Listuret it talks about a book called Can't You Sleep, Like Bears. This cook was talking about divorce in a way for some kids to understand what some people go through at home. It also covers topics about death as well. I believe that Children's literature is life lessons made more simple and easy for the little one to understand. They talk about the consequence of lying, telling the truth, being different from others, and ect there is a lot you can get from picture books.
Childrends lit started off by people just telling stories orally and it got passed down from century to century and become the famous fairy tales we talk about today. This type of story telling any age can read and talk about; they all have different meanings in what they are trying to get across like Little Red Riding Hood. That story is about don't trusting everything you hear or see out there and to be safe by keeping where you are going or any personal information to yourself. The basic stories that everyone knows have the most meaning full life lesson for young adults literature and childrens adults literature.
Young adult literature on the other hand is a little more complex. You need to understand the theme of the book and know the message it is trying to get across to you. There is more about character development that they will need to know. Young Adult literature is for kids more in the age of 12-20. There are also Fictional books out there that are based on real events that they will be able to pull real factual information. YA fiction will help kids relate to the character and find a common ground on who they are and help them find out more about themself. Since this is aimed towards older adolescents they are more adequate to handle tough topics like domestic violence, bullying, and depression. The topics will teach adolescents how to handle new situations when it comes up in life and they won't be that surprised about it as well. The life lessons you get from books are priceless and even if you are little as 2 weeks or old as 90 you will always find new topics of interest and new themes in a book.
