Darkness
Alexie shermans point of view is that she writes these children's books in order to tell teenagers the reality that one faces in life especially during middle school or high school. The main character in the book " The diary of a part time Indian". Although Junior struggles with his lisp and stutter, he is able to overcome the bullying that he faces on a day to day basis.
Meghan Gurdon thinks that books nowadays mostly have to do with violence, kidnapping, incest. She thinks that books shouldn't show much a readers reality because it opens up their mind to things that they didn't know could happen. For example, a book talking about a teenagers struggles and depressions will protray the character to self harm themselves but the reader wouldn't have even know about that possibility if it wasn't introduced to them. She suggests that there should be a separation in the library so that young readers wouldn't be introduced to certain subjects so early on.
Alexie contend that the best books should deal with hard or dark subjects because those are the ones that have the most affect on readers. Those are the ones that have the most impact in their life and readers might also be able to relate to them in a higher level. She argues that many readers have first hand experience with the situations that arise in the books that she writes or reads.
I side with Alexie because readers will hear of these gruesome topics through books or through a different way. It is inevitable to try to avoid this. It is something that many readers don't know how to deal with and might find some comfort in when reading a book that involves that scenario. It can also be a very hard topic to talk about between parents and kids so books like these allows someone to inform them without the need of the conversation.
